Raylon closes the door behind him, and I have to pick my jaw up off the floor. What just happened? My head is swimming, and my heart is racing. Did he just give me the biggest orgasm of my life and then run away? I'm pretty sure that's exactly what just happened.

I run my hand over my forehead, trying to get my brain under control. I look around the apartment. I can't be here anymore. I need to get out of here. I need to breathe. I quickly go to my room and change into jeans, a sweatshirt, and tennis shoes before rushing out of the apartment.

The barracks is quiet. The sun is going down and the mood of the Marines I pass is somber. I imagine everyone is still in mourning after the funeral today.

I walk to the edge of the barracks where there is a small park with trees, a walking track, and some benches. I sit down and breathe in the cool air. I can't believe this is my life. Everything is so upside down and inside out. But what did I expect? I haven't been having any luck in the love department. And Raylon's behavior is just about par for the course.

I hate sitting here feeling sorry for myself. It's not going to solve anything. But I also don't want to go back to the apartment. I don't care that Raylon is sleeping. I really don't want to be around him right now.

I understand where he's coming from. That's the worst thing. His apology before leaving the room really struck a chord. He wants to be with me. He said so. And I believe him.

No man could give that kind of pleasure out of a weird sense of duty or because he is overcome by the effects of the matching serum. At least, I really hope not. I want to believe we are going to have our happily ever after. No matter how impossible it seems right now.

I watch the sun setting on the horizon. A tear slips from my eye. I've been so focused on finding my match, and then pining over Raylon, but everything that's happening around me hasn't really sunk in.

Sophia went all the way back to Earth to get Abigail. Abigail still doesn't trust the Martians any more than Bobby. The gross bugs that abducted us in the first place are back again a thousand years in the future, and they are poised to destroy our new world. This new home where I had hoped I'd find a match and start the family I've always wanted.

It feels like I've lost that chance yet again. It all seems so impossibly far away. I wipe away a stray tear and try to sniff back the sadness. I feel like I'm being an overemotional little girl. And maybe I am. I'm twenty-seven years old, not some teenager. I should be able to handle this better—but maybe that's not true. We've been through so much. I deserve a good long cry.
